There’s something magical about arriving by Amtrak into Roanoke! As you pull into the station, the first thing that you see is the majestic Hotel Roanoke perched on the hill in the distance, like a scene from a storybook. Hotel Roanoke History

The Hotel Roanoke has been the hub of the Roanoke community for well over a century. Opened in 1882 by the Norfolk and Western Railway, the hotel has seen Roanoke transform from a rural railroad town into a bustling city. We recently took a guided tour of this magnificent hotel known affectionately as “The Grand Old Lady on the Hill” with General Manager Brian Wells. We learned more about her history from the tour as well as from the YouTube documentary of the same name.

We learned that the hotel was originally created for railroad passengers. From there, it grew to be a hotspot for travelers and socialites. Throughout time, the hotel underwent various renovations and expansions. It also held up against the Great Depression and a fire. Then, in the 1990s, it changed hands and was closed.

After that, the town banded together to raise over $5 million, which included more renovations and expansions as well as a convenient pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks. It re-opened in 1995 under the DoubleTree brand and was added to the National Register of Historic Places the following year. Today, Hotel Roanoke is currently owned by Virginia Tech and operated under the Curio Collection by Hilton brand.

Steam Coffee + Eatery serves a full selection of Starbucks beverages and casual bites.
