If you are wondering whether Pittsburgh is a good city to visit with kids, the answer is a resounding YES! We highly recommend a long weekend to take in all the adventure that Pittsburgh has to offer! We suggest visiting in the fall because the temperature is perfect… Not too hot and not too cold. Plus, the city looks beautiful against the backdrop of the autumn leaves and there are lots of fall festivals happening too!

This lively city offers a perfect blend of cool spots to explore, delicious food to indulge in, and friendly vibes that make you feel right at home. Whether you’re strolling through unique neighborhoods, trying out local delicacies, or soaking in the rich culture, Pittsburgh has something for everyone to enjoy. Let me take you on a whirlwind tour of our recent weekend escapade, where every corner turned revealed, a new adventure waiting to be discovered!

Monster Pumpkins Festival

We had a blast at the Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkins Festival! This annual extravaganza was packed with fun. It includes a 5k Run and Walk, food, drink and craft vendors, kids’ activities, pie eating contests, horse-drawn carriage rides, and tons of insta-worthy photo opps with ginormous pumpkins! The festival also included hand-blown glass demos by Vessel Studio Glass and unbelievable pumpkin carvings by Brendan Conaway aka “The Pittsburgh Pumpkin Guy”!

The main highlight of the event is watching the massive 2-ton pumpkin drop from 130 feet high into a tiny pool to raise money for charity! 𝗢𝗵 𝗺𝘆 𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗗!!! Don’t stand too close though! A giant pumpkin iceberg shot out into the crowd + we got pumpkin guts all over our shoes and pants. It was totally worth it for such a memorable experience. Check out the pumpkin drop here!

The Cathedral of Learning

One of the most remarkable attractions in the city that you simply can’t miss is the Cathedral of Learning, and the best part? It’s completely free to visit and accessible 24 hours a day! Standing tall at 535 feet with 31 Nationality Rooms showcasing global diversity, houses a theater, computer labs, and food court along with classrooms, it’s a testament to human creativity. Also, did you know it’s the world’s 2nd tallest educational building and a registered historic landmark?

Kennywood Park Fall Fest

Experience the excitement of Kennywood’s Phantom Fall Fest, blending family-friendly fun by day with thrilling haunted adventures by night. At night, test your bravery in six haunted areas including mALICE in Wonderland Unleashed plus four scare zones! From entertaining shows and scavenger hunts to unique rides and fall-themed treats, there’s something for everyone. With one ticket for both day and night activities, it’s a fantastic value. We loved the unique rides including Whip, Kangaroo and Ghostwood Estates! AND the Potato Patch -—gotta get the fries!

Make sure you seize the opportunity on the upcoming Kennywood Holiday Lights for a magical holiday experience from November 24th to January 1st!

The National Aviary

Explore the enchanting world of birds at the National Aviary, where nature’s wonders come to life in the heart of the United States. You’ll see more than 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 in 8 different habitats including penguins, sloths, the magnificent Steller’s Sea Eagles, and…..𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝘅𝗲𝘀! Your visit promises a mesmerizing experience. Now, we’ve been to A LOT of wildlife venues, but I’ve never seen anything like these creatures.

The National Aviary is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm, except on Tuesdays. With most exhibits indoors, it’s a fantastic spot to visit any time of year. Parking is available in a small lot for a $5 flat fee, and there’s also street parking nearby. Don’t forget to catch the animal talks and feedings happening throughout the day for an immersive experience!

The Heinz History Center

Our trip to Pittsburgh was lit! We visited up the Heinz History Center, the ultimate spot for history buffs and adventure seekers alike. This place is off the charts, with mad cool exhibits and interactive vibes. From the Kidsburgh play area to the epic sports museum, and let’s not forget the Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood gig – it’s all fire! Plus, the ticket’s good for two days and it includes access to the Fort Pitt Museum, Meadowcroft Rockshelter, and Historic Village in Avella in Washington County.

Which part of this epic journey are you most hyped about? For me, it was straight-up Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood vibes – total blast from the past!

Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is a must-visit for animal enthusiasts. Located in Highland Park, it offers a diverse range of habitats from the African Savannah to the Asian Forest, where you can encounter elephants, lions, and giraffes up close. Explore the aquarium section with colorful fish and sea turtles, and enjoy interactive experiences like feeding sessions. With its commitment to conservation and education, the zoo provides a fun and informative experience for all ages. Don’t miss out on this wild adventure in Pittsburgh!

Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium Asian Lantern Festival

Each year between late August and October, experience the magic of the Asian Lantern Festival at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium! If you’re in the area, you MUST try to see it!

Each year, there is a special theme. When we went in 2023, the theme was “World of Wonders” to celebrate the zoo’s 125th anniversary with a focus on global conservation. Wander through 50 stunning silk and steel sculptures, marvel at the intricate lantern displays, and enjoy interactive experiences perfect for memorable photos.

The festival also features captivating performances by talented area dance and music groups and thrilling martial arts demonstrations. Don’t miss out on delicious Asian cuisine like crab rangoon and Korean BBQ skewers, along with refreshing sake sangria. 

Moonshot Museum

Check out the Moonshot Museum in Pittsburgh for a space adventure like no other! Dive into the history of lunar missions and get up close with artifacts that have been to the moon and back. The interactive exhibits make space feel just a bit closer to home.

Kids will have a blast with the scavenger hunt, 3D activities, and the chance to send their drawings to the moon! It’s a fantastic spot whether you’re a space geek or just looking for something cool to do.

Located at 1016 N Lincoln Ave, Pittsburgh, PA, the museum is open Thursday to Sunday, 11 am-4 pm. ASTC Passport Members and kids under 2 get in free. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 3-17. Plus, you can save $2 with a Carnegie Science Center ticket. Don’t miss out!

Carnegie Science Center

Here’s a look back at our fall visit to the Carnegie Science Center! Located along the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, it’s a must-visit for science enthusiasts of all ages. The Buhl Planetarium offers stunning cosmic shows, while the USS Requin submarine provides a fascinating dive into Cold War history. The Science Behind Pixar exhibit, open through January 5, features a massive playground with beloved characters. Don’t miss the hands-on exhibits like the miniature railroad, H2OH! Water play, and Bricksburgh LEGO experience. Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm (closed Tuesdays after summer and during major Acrisure Stadium events), the center offers free entry for ASTC Passport Members and kids under 2, with tickets priced at $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $15 for kids. Duquesne Incline

If you’re in Pittsburgh, don’t miss the Duquesne Incline. Opened in 1877 and built by top engineer Samuel Diescher, this historic ride offers amazing city views and a taste of the past. Start at the Lower Station to learn about the incline’s history, dating back to 1854. The short ride up to the Upper Station on Grandview Avenue provides stunning views of Pittsburgh’s skyline and rivers. Almost lost in 1962, the Incline was saved and reopened by the Society for the Preservation of the Duquesne Heights Incline in 1963. They’ve kept it running smoothly ever since, making it a reliable commuter route and a top visitor attraction.

Best Family-Friendly Place to Stay in Pittsburgh

Need recommendations on where to stay with kids in Pittsburgh? We were really happy with SpringHill Suites Pittsburgh North Shore! The rooms were spacious and included a mini fridge, microwave, and Keurig coffee machine. Free breakfast was served daily and included a lot of options and the ever-popular waffle machine! There is also an indoor pool. The hotel is centrally located near attractions. It is just a half mile from Acrisure Stadium and one mile from PPG Paints Arena. The only thing we did not like was that the parking fee was a bit steep. We opted to park at the lot right outside of the hotel, which saved us a little bit of money.
